About Siberian Huskies

To those of us who have Huskies there is no other dog on the planet. The love is unconditional. To us, there is no look more awesome than the Husky look. But there is a LOT more to the Siberian Husky than just that look. Siberian Huskies are very intelligent. As working dogs, they are very active. They love to run all out. They need to be engaged in activity or they get bored and get into trouble. They love games. I have one that plays soccer with me. They have an incredible sense of humor and think it is funny to outfox you. They must be fenced for their own safety and it is hard to keep them in a fence. Contrary to their sometimes intimidating looks (with the mask), they are very affectionate dogs and are very good with children. They do not make good guard dogs as they will invite the burglar in.

Siberian huskies are generally clean and do not have a doggie odor. They do not sweat like other dogs. If they did, they would freeze to death in the artic. They stay cool through the pads of their feet and their tongue. It is very important to keep them cool in the hot weather. I keep a kiddie pool in the yard and they love it. They shed slightly during the year and blow their coats in the spring. It is like fleecing time. No kidding. The undercoat comes out in handfuls for about 2 weeks. Then they look nice and sleek for the summer.

Huskies that are registered with the AKC (American Kennel Club) can have full registration or limited registration. Full registration means you have breeding rights and can show the dog in AKC dog shows. Limited means you only want the dog for a pet and you agree to never breed the dog. You cannot show them in the AKC dog shows. You can show them in other kinds of dog shows. Breeders will sell a puppy one way or the other, or they will allow the buyer to decide. But there is usually a difference in the price. Full registration price typically runs $100 - 150 more than the limited price.

AKC registration does not guarantee a show quality dog. There are variations in the quality even with the registration. I tell my buyers to look at the parents and look at the pedigree. It is very hard to tell from the puppy what you are going to get, especially when they are very young. If you like the looks and temperment of the parents and would be happy if your puppy grew up to be like either one of them, you can't go wrong.
